S@mple

I recently had the opportunity to photograph S@mple, the latest addition to Richmond’s dining scene, for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.  Apart from the fun juxtaposition of metal and brick, the clean white lines, occasional orchid, and of course the abundance of technological geekery that was hard to pry myself away from, I had my choice of beautiful food to photograph thanks to the small plates by chef Todd Butler. In case any of you felt the urge to order one of these dishes, this is what yore looking at: the farmer’s basket with shaved brussels sprouts and kale, sunflower seeds, walnuts, dried cherries, pine nuts and parmesan peppercorn dressing; Shanghai fried rice with rock shrimp, shrimp tempura, forbidden black rice and egg omelet; royal trumpet mushroom kebab; the cubano, with roast pork, smoked bacon, gruyere, mustard and grilled onions (please, I want one now); cinnamon apple empanadas with caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. To see my slideshow with an interview with S@mple owner Adam Bell click *here* and for Dana Craig’s review of S@mple click *here*. Sprout

 Sprout Market & Cafe is an adorable new addition to the Richmond restaurant scene, filled to the brim with DIY details.  Wine and beer lists are applied to the inside of small book covers and dinner menus to old record covers. The lunch menu, which changes daily, is written on a blackboard in the small market in the front of the restaurant. Sprout’s two owners, Jamie and Laurie Lay are friendly and approachable and great to talk to about all of the eco-friendly ways they are running their business. They can pretty much name which Virginia farm or grower each and every ingredient on their menu comes from. Added to their super-local approach, is a desire to be as green as possible. According to Laurie, the chefs at Sprout try to use every part of the ingredient, to the point of grinding chicken bones up for compost or using the leftover vegetable oil to power their diesel truck.  If you’re perusing Sprout’s market you will find produce as well as the work of local artists. Sprout also moonlights as a gallery, showcasing a different local artist every month in connection to Richmond’s First Fridays Art Walk. six burner

 

Looking at these photos just makes me hungry. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s lunchtime, but the idea of fresh red snapper crudo with clementines and pistachio oil makes my mouth water. Top it off with a bite of that red velvet cupcake and I’m in heaven…I shot the review for six burner restaurant & bar  for the Richmond Times-Dispatch and built a slideshow, click on the link and listen to chef  Philip Denny talk about his food. The menu is seasonal, so don’t be disappointed if the snapper isn’t on it, just try something else!
