Jenny+Gaston: married!
I have been very fortunate this year to witness love in so many different couples and one of my favorite things has been the mixing of cultural backgrounds. It has come out in the wedding traditions I photograph, foreign languages I hear in the busy hum of the day and small details that the bride and groom incorporate in their celebration to honor each other’s heritages. Jenny and Gaston did a beautiful job of bringing in a taste of Africa and Gaston’s home country of Cameroon to make for a rich and diverse experience. Their location at Celebrations at the Reservoir was stunning, a 6pm ceremony with perfect light and beautiful silky blue stillness. Jenny surpised her new husband with African drummers after the ceremony, which made for vibrant and rich images. A first dance by the fountain, stolen moments through the trees and a wedding party with the moves made for a happy happy photo lady. I wish this beautiful couple much love and a lifetime of learning each other’s stories and making a new story of their own.
and, man, was this a dancing crowd or what! I wanted to put my cameras down and shake my booty right along with them!
A little taste of Old Havana: Havana ’59
Havana ’59, located in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom, is one of my favorite Richmond hangouts. It’s the ultimate summer spot, with the rooftop terrace overlooking the 17th St. Farmer’s Market and the wall of open windows opening up the downstairs bar and restaurant to the street and all passersby. Salsa music fills the air and the colorful details throughout the restaurant allow for an experience that is different than most other bars and restaurants in Richmond. I admit I have a small bias toward Havana ’59, having spent many a night waiting for my sister and some of my closest friends to finish their shifts there so we could hit the town. Because of this I was particularly excited recently when the paper sent me to capture the atmosphere of Havana’s happy hour. Following are some of the images from my shoot. Enjoy!
